TECHNOL. Instrument de mesure des distances composé d'une mire graduée, observée au moyen d'une lunette munie d'un réticule. C'est avec un déploiement extraordinaire d'appareils de toute nature, lorgnettes, lunettes, télémètres, stadias, que l'on voit les premières troupes aborder le terrain de l'action, scruter l'horizon, en mesurer les distances (FOCH, Princ. guerre, 1911, p. XI).
Prononc. et Orth.:[stadja]. Plur. des stadias. Étymol. et Hist. 1862 fém. (Ann. chim. et phys., 3e série, t. 64, p. 388); 1865 fém. (Ann. du génie civil, oct., n° 10, p. 670). Prob. formé sur le lat. stadium, lui-même empr. au gr. (stade1), mesure en usage dans l'anc. Grèce.
